TEHRAN -- Iranian filmmaker Behruz Afkhami plans to support Mehdi Karrubi’s candidacy in the forthcoming presidential election campaign.

Karrubi was Mahmud Ahmadinejad’s main rival in the previous presidential election.
“My political orientation is clear,” Afkhami told the Persian service of the Fars News Agency on Thursday.
“Among the reformists, I’m in the camp backing Mr. Karrubi. I believe he is the best choice for the presidency,” he added.
Afkhami, who also served in the Iranian Majlis from 2000 to 2004, described his efforts for membership in the parliament as mistake, adding, “I never intended to reenter the country’s political arena,” adding, “My maximum political activity will be limited to making a campaign film for Mr. Karrubi.”
The modern style of presidential campaigning made its first appearance in Iran with the campaign film made by Afkhami for former president Mohammad Khatami’s reelection campaign in 2001.
He also made a campaign film for Karrubi, who had promised to allocate 50,000 tomans (about $50) to every Iranian per month in case of victory in the presidential election.
Last year, Afkhami completed the production of “The Morning Son”, a big budget TV series about the life of Imam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.
His credits also include the TV series “Kuchak-e Jangali” and the feature-length films “The Bride,” “The Day of the Angel,” “The Day of Satan and “Hemlock”.
